19세기 영국 소설가 제인 오스틴의 대표작 <오만과 편견>이 28일 출간 200주년을 맞았다. 영국 일간 텔레그래프는 <오만과 편견>을 포함, 문학사상 가장 빛나는 첫 문장을 가진 걸작소설 30편을 선정해 소개했다. 사회의 부조리와 인생의 복잡함, 사랑의 아픔 등 작품을 관통하는 주제를 한 문장만으로도 통찰해볼 수 있다.

<오만과 편견>은 "재산깨나 있는 독신남은 아내가 꼭 필요할 것이라는 점은 누구나 인정하는 보편적인 진리이다"는 문장으로 시작한다. 평범해 보이지만 당시 영국 부르주아 계층과 사회적 관습 및 편견을 비꼬는 문장이라는 평가를 받고 있다.

두번째는 러시아의 대문호 레프 톨스토이의 <안나 카레리나>의 첫 문장, "모든 행복한 가정은 다 비슷한 모양새지만, 불행한 가정은 제각각 불행의 이유가 다르다"가 꼽혔다.

세번째는 프랑스 혁명기를 길고도 아름다운 문장으로 표현한 찰스 디킨스의 <두 도시 이야기>가 선정됐다. 문장은 이렇다. "그것은 최고의 시기였다, 그것은 최악의 시기였다, 지혜의 시대이기도 했고, 바보들의 시대이기도 했고, 믿음의 시대였고, 불신의 시대였다, 빛의 계절이었고, 어둠의 계절이었다, 희망의 봄이었고, 절망의 겨울이었다, 우리는 모든 것을 갖고 있었고, 아무것도 갖지 못하기도 했다, 우리 모두는 천국으로 향하고 있었고, 또 반대로 가고 있었다."

조지 오웰의 대표작 <1984년>는 "4월, 맑고 쌀쌀한 날이었다. 괘종시계가 13시를 알렸다"는 문장으로 시작한다. 전체주의적 절대권력 '빅 브러더'를 탄생시킨 이 소설은 '13시'라는 개념을 등장시켜 새로운 세계로 독자를 안내한다.

악명 높은 신경쇠약 묘사로 유명한 실비아 플라스의 <벨 자>의 첫 문장이 다섯번째로 꼽혔다. "기묘하고 찌는듯한 여름, 그들이 로젠버그 부부를 전기의자에 앉힌 여름이었다"이다. 1953년 빈약한 증거에도 불구하고 미국에서 간첩죄로 사형에 처해진 로젠버그 부부 사건을 내세워, 매카시즘에 질식된 사회적 배경을 집약했다.

어린 여자아이에 대한 병적인 사랑을 담은 블라디미르 나보코프의 <롤리타>는 사랑하는 대상의 이름을 발음할 때의 느낌으로 문을 연다. "롤리타, 내 삶의 빛, 내 허리의 불꽃. 나의 죄, 나의 영혼. 롤-리-타. 혀 끝이 입천장을 치고 내려오고, 세 번째는 이에 다다르는 여정. 롤.리.타"이다. 가르시아 마르케스의 <콜레라 시대의 사랑>은 "피할 수 없었다, 쓴 아몬드 향기는 언제나 그에게 보답 없는 사랑의 운명을 상기시켰다"로 시작한다.

주인공의 신선한 등장으로 시작하는 작품들도 있다. 마크 트웨인의 <허클베리 핀의 모험>은 "톰 소여의 모험이라는 제목의 책을 읽지 않았다면 아마 나에 대해서도 모르겠지만, 그건 상관없어. 그 책은 마크 트웨인 선생이 쓴 것인 것인데, 거의 사실이야"라고 시작한다. 허먼 멜빌의 <모비딕>도 "날 이쉬마엘이라고 불러줘(내 이름은 이쉬마엘이야)"라는 인사로 시작한다. 제임스 메튜 배리의 <피터 팬>의 시작은 "모든 아이들은 자란다, 한 명만 빼고"이다. 호밀밭에서 뛰어 노는 아이들이 낭떠러지로 떨어지지 않도록 지켜주는 것 외에 하고 싶은 일이 없다는, 방황하는 10대 홀든(J.D 샐린저의 <호밀밭의 파수꾼>의 주인공)은 "나에 대해 듣고 싶다면, 내가 어디서 태어났는지, 어린 시절이 얼마나 형편없었는지, 내 부모님 무슨 직업을 가지고 있는지, 내가 태어나기 전에 무슨 일들이 있었는지 같은 데이비드 코퍼필드식의 헛소리를 듣고 싶겠지, 하지만 난 그딴 이야기 하고 싶지 않아"라며 첫 입을 뗀다.

프란츠 카프카의 <변신>은 " 그레고르 잠자는어느 날 아침 거북한 꿈에서 깨어나면서, 자신이 침대에서 괴물 같은 벌레로 바뀐 것을 발견했다"라는 직설화법으로 충격을 준다. L. P. 하틀리의 <중개자>는 "과거는 외국이다, 거기서 사람들은 다르게 산다"라고 시작한다. 영국 매체에서 선정한 만큼 주로 영문학이 많이 차지 하고 있다.
