To me it means:
Don’t listen to slander or any evil gossip.
Don’t imagine people to be bad when they’re not. Not everyone is out to get you.
Do not spread idle gossip or rumours about others. If you can’t speak in a positive, constructive, solution oriented way, keep quiet.
Remember your spiritual big picture. You are an evolving energy pattern, a soul, a free spirit. You are here for your own convenience to learn life lessons and do your life purpose. You are responsible for all your thoughts, feelings and choices. Keep thoughts positive, feel the love of the universe within you and be the best p
… (more)The proverb, which originated with a 17th-century carving of the “three wise monkeys” over a door of the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan, has been variously interpreted:
- Among Buddhists, the proverb means to be of good mind, speech and action.
- In the Western world, both the proverb and the image are often used to refer to a lack of moral responsibility on the part of people who look the other way on evil deeds.
- Within organized crime, it can signify a code of silence.
The phrase relates to a picture of three monkeys, one covering its eyes, one covering its ears and one covering its mouth, apparently originating with the Japanese, who named the monkeys Mizaru, Kikazaru and Iwazaru, respectively. It is believed that this derives from a Confucian teaching to avoid impropriety (do not look at what is not proper, do not listen to what is not proper, do not speak of what is not proper, do not do what is not proper).
Oh those clever Chinese. They have made a statement through the "brass" monkeys that opens up to all sorts of meaning and is cleverly designed to make one think.! This is purely a personal opinion I hasten to add.
There are many lessons to be taken from this one statement that can be applied to many valuable lessons of life.
One can take out of it what they wish if it applies to them personally. One could see it as a way to turn their ears, sight and speech away from anything that is detrimental or wrong ; ‘hearing, speaking and seeing ‘ no evil.
Also one can see it as " burying their heads i
I think it means to keep your mind pure. We process information through our senses. What we see affects how we think, What we hear affects us how we also think. And speaking evil comes from our mind and hearts. it means that our mind is what drives us into actions. When we guard ourselve from doing these things..we are become pure in thoughts and pure in actions.
A2A, thank you: What the other posters said. Don't wallow in negativity. Walk away. Don't play that game. See the glass as half-full.
Don’t talk about things you don’t understand.
If you are going to lecture people ad nauseum about a subject (especially one of some importance) then at least have the courtesy to do some research about it first, or - before you start lecturing them - preface your comments with “this is just my uneducated, uninformed opinion”.
Note - this is just my uneducated, uninformed opinion. As to what this really means, I have no clue. It just seemed like a good interpretation to me :)
It means to remain deliberately and totally ignorant of that which is perceived as wrong. One feels a pressure to never acknowledge having heard of evil ideas, to never acknowledge having seen evil in action, and above all, to never sound like one is even questioning if it is evil.
This is the paradigm that forms cults, and breeds fundamentalism. People must always be ready to question their beliefs, even when they feel that they are inerrant.
A better saying would be 'Do no evil'.
It means exactly what the saying implies. Do not listen to those who speak evil of others. Do not look for evil behavior and do not spread evil thru conversation. Mainly because these three behaviors are considered as major sources of evil in themselves.
There are numerous statues or illustrations of three monkeys together. One is covering his ears. One is covering his eyes and one is covering his mouth.
In the film: Planet of the Apes with Charlton Heston, these three famous monkey poses are actually referred to in the ape trial of the human. Something added as a private joke by the dire
It means - walk upon the path of righteousness. To do what is right requires us to fight against evil. To fight it you must hear no evil.
In other words you will hear evil being said but you won’t put up with it.
You must see no evil. You will see evil being done but you won’t support it or encourage it. You would look the other way.
You must speak no evil. If you are able to fight the hearing of evil and the seeing of evil then speaking no evil would come naturally…. because this one is in your control.
Don’t listen to someone suggesting something that’s wrong,
If you listen without comment you become partly responsible for whatever they plan.
Don’t watch while someone does something wrong,
If you watched and didn’t try to stop it, you are partly responsible for whatever they did.
Don’t say anything that is wrong.
You are responsible for whatever comes out of your mouth.
Edited to add, by don’t listen and don’t watch, I do not mean put your fingers in your ears or close your eyes. I mean that if you hear or see something that is wrong, you should try to prevent it, not that you should just turn aw
… (more)As per my understanding, evil is like a poison; whatever it comes in contact with it injures. Both the vessel that holds evil, and the people who witness evil are being corroded gradually. Evil ALWAYS brings harm in the long run. It's like asking a witch for something, in the end the boon received turns out to be a curse. Also, what one exposes oneself to, one attracts more. Therefore to protect yourself hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Let the others do what they may, they are free, the best we can do is warn them.
It is a Chinese saying, referring to the three monkeys of their divine pantheon. In another way, one can say indeed that if one tries to be positive in word, deed, and thought, that one can avoid doing evil and also avoid falling into the traps of the wicked. The evil ones fall into their own trap for seeing, thinking, listening to , and doing evil.
Speak no evil is obvious. But you might wonder how you can avoid seeing or hearing evil, since these things are beyond your control. But not entirely true. You can avoid visiting places or associating with people involved in evil, and I think that is primarily what it is getting at. They did not include "do no evil", but I think they assume their audience is already committed to that.
see no evil …………..hear no evil……speak no evil
Simply put: ignore and do not repeat gossip.
… (more)Yes, they are and they know it. Just like they know right from wrong. Their evil is well calculated and they know exactly who to target with their BS served on a platter. It’s how they choose and who they choose to do evil to or be evil to. Most will even laugh or have a smirk on their faces after wronging a person because it was done intentionally. They are well aware of the fraud that they are committing because this would explain why they walk around in masks all day and everyday. They will even turn your own kids against you, your family, friends, and co-workers. I’m not sure why some peop

I disagree.
When I taught Sunday school, I worked with many toddlers.
When toddlers saw something they wanted, they immediately stole it from another toddler. They were selfish, although no one taught them to be that way. Often, when a toddler was stolen from, they hit the other toddler who stole from them. I guarantee you, no one taught that toddler to hit and hurt someone.
Humans, I believe, are born selfish, unkind, and uncaring.
Kindness is learned. And, to be kin
… (more)'Hear no evil' really means 'you can HEAR it, just don't pay any ATTENTION to it'. To 'See no evil', you can either cover your eyes and literally not see it, or pay no attention. You often can't help but to HEAR evil, especially rumors about others, but you shouldn't repeat anything.
Mahatma Gandhiji used to preach this a lot.
The meaning is quite simple-
(i) Do not hear evil- Stay away from people who speak bad about you. It is rightly said- ‘A lion doesn’t care about a sheep’s opinion.’ Try to stay away from people who swear.
(ii) Do not see evil- This line means we should not see things which are bad and might hurt us. Do not see violent and sexual movies. Do not see abuse without doing anything about it.
(iii) Do not speak evil- Do not gossip and say bad things about others. Do not boast in front of others. Remember ‘empty vessel sounds much’. Do not use foul language.
